Neuro oncology is the medical science that deals with the activities of the brain and the control of central nervous system over the brain. A physician who specializes in neuro oncology is called neuro oncologist. A neuro oncologist diagnoses the disease and treats all types of tumors in the brain. It is the most complicated disease that requires sophisticated instruments and methods for treating brain tumors. Physicians diagnose the presence of tumor by analyzing symptoms like memory problems, attention spans language, difficulty in perceiving things, behavior changes due to an injury in the head and diseases that affect the nervous system.
A neuro oncologist works with special oncologists, nurses, dietitians and other social workers in order to make the treatment a success. The physician always discusses the disease as well as the treatment options with the patient and their family members so that they can get a good understanding about the disease. Brain is the most sensitive part in the body, if any damage occurs due to a surgery a patient may go in coma state for the rest of his life so the neuro oncologist very carefully analyses the conditions of the patients, such as the age, overall health, and location of the tumor, before performing a surgery.
The latest technology that is used to treat brain tumors is the Posititron Emission Tomography (PET CT) and the Computerized Tomography which can detect metabolic activity. It can take 32 images per second and gives details about the tumor size and location. Using these latest technologies the neuro oncologist performs surgery on the patients without any scars. Sometimes the patient is given radiation to prevent the growth of the cancerous cells. Apart from treating the tumors the physician counsels the patients to overcome surgery effects and improve the quality of life.
