A surgical oncologist is one who specializes in the surgical methods of treating cancer. This is a very challenging and dedicated profession because one has to spend almost 15 years to become a surgical oncologist. In order to become a surgical oncologist, one has to complete his graduation in surgery and then undergo the training programs that are approved by the Society of Surgical oncology. In the training program, the surgeon is taught on the basic surgical methods of treating common malignancies in breast and lungs. He is also enlightened on the treatment and management of complex, abnormal malignancies and diseases in endocrine, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and ovaries.
A surgical oncologist is also given a deep insight of major and most common type of cancers, like the breast cancer, melanoma, collateral cancer, liver cancer and stomach cancer that are treated with surgery. The basics of radiation and pathology are also a part of the course that is used in the later stage of treatment. Apart from the above mentioned, one has to submit a project on malignant diseases during the training program which will help the physician to treat the disease in an effective manner. However in most cases, a general surgeon can perform surgeries for the most common type of malignancies like the breast and abdominal cancer.
On the whole, a surgical oncologist is the one who actually heals the patient and gets him out of the disease once and for all. The more a surgical oncologist practices the more he advances in his field for example, if he performs surgery to several patients who are infected with breast cancer, he becomes proficient in diagnosing and treating patients with similar disease in due course of time. Apart from this, a surgical oncologist attends research programs to get updates about different types surgical methods that can be implemented on their patient for a better result.
