Our body is made up of cells. Every organ in our body has cells that work in a unique manner for the organ to function properly. Cancer occurs if the cells in a particular organ are not working in a way they are supposed to work. Cancer is a deadly dangerous disease that can affect anyone in any part of the body irrespective of age and gender. It can also affect the urinary system and reproductive system. A discipline that involves the diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to the reproductive and urinary system is called urology and a physician who masters this discipline is called urologist. A specialist involved in treating the cancer in the urinary and reproductive organs is called urologist oncologist.
The organs studied under urology are kidneys, urethra, urinary bladder, prostate, penis, testes, epididymis, vas deferens and seminal vesicle. In most cases, cancer occurs in kidneys, prostate, renal cell cancer, transitional cell cancer, penile cancer and hematuria. A lump or a tumor may be benign or malignant and there are innovative procedures to remove these tumors or lumps. An urologist examines the lump and suggests the patients for X- ray, scan and blood tests. An urologist recommends a patient to an oncologist if the tests prove the cells to be malignant.
An oncologist after examining the patient will discuss about the disease and the treatment options. There are many advanced treatments like the nerve sparing radical prostatectomy and robotically assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy. The oncologist will consult with other physicians about the patient’s condition and decide the treatment based on the patients body condition and on the intensity of cancer. After treatment, the physician analyses the cause of the disease and prescribes drugs to avoid them further. He also recommends his patients to visit him in regular intervals to avoid relapse.
